NBA’s educational program began in 2004 with a $1 million U.S. EPA grant and is expanding rapidly. Because of the newness of brownfields and the multiple stakeholders groups in the marketplace there is a strong demand for training on the many aspects of the redevelopment process. The NBA has developed four types of training to help advance the market:

Short Courses
NBA staff works with members to define contemporary topics in which they have expertise to develop one- and two-day short course seminars. These are intensive, technical training sessions that are available to members and non-members to educate them on policy and legislative changes, as well as best practices for redeveloping brownfields.
Listed below are descriptions of the types of short courses the NBA has provided in the past, please keep checking back for updates. If you have suggestion for potential future course topics, please submit them to Mandy Bruggeman at mandyb@brownfieldassociation.org.
- Brownfield Building Blocks
A survey course that teaches the fundamentals of brownfield redevelopment and shows how to navigate opportunities in the brownfield industry.
- Valuation of Impaired Properties
Three perspectives - appraiser, developer and tax assessor will show their approach for evaluating environmentally impaired properties and discuss the limitations with traditional appraisal methodologies.
- Financing & Structuring Brownfield Deals
Learn how a brownfield developer combines debt, equity and government incentives to finance the acquisition, clean up and redevelopment of environmentally impaired property.
- Environmental Due Diligence
An intense course geared to service providers who perform due diligence for buyers. This course will focus on the new AAI rule and ASTM E1527 - 05 standards and the role of Phase I ESA’s and continuing obligations.
- Corporate Financial Reporting -- Cancelled
The recent changes in Sarbanes Oxley and FASB (FASB 143/FIN 47) along with potential changes in Financial Assurance requirements have created confusion in what, when and how to report environmental liabilities. This course is geared to corporate executive who need to keep up to date on the state of the practice.

Testimonial
“The NBA short courses attended so far this year have been of great value to us. We enjoyed the classroom style format that encouraged participation from the attendees. The courses have given us insight into the industry and have helped us to narrow our focus in seeking out and evaluating brownfield deals.”
