Nowhere has building sustainable communities become more important than in Hawaii. A land constrained market experiencing rapid growth, and dependent on imported oil, along with Hawaii’s abundant renewable resources and respect for the land make it an ideal location to implement sustainable initiatives.

This full-day workshop has been developed by the NBA using grant funds provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It is specifically designed to bring both a national and local perspective to building more sustainable communities in Hawaii. Learn how to enhance the economics of urban centers by recycling land and infrastructure, using clean energy, green buildings, smart transportation and a regional planning approach that promote building green on brown.

This workshop is targeted to both representatives from the public sector in Hawaii that are involved in economic and community development, urban planning, environmental management, brownfield redevelopment and sustainability, as well as private sector practitioners such as architects, land planners, engineers, remediation contractors/consultants, lawyers, real estate developers and others interested in sustainable development.

Sustainable Communities Workshop Goals:

  • Encourage properties to be cleaned up and sustainably developed
  • Improve communications – teach practitioners how to be more conversant in “green,” brownfield redevelopment and sustainable terminology, techniques and processes.
  • Connect land and air programs to promote sustainability
  • Learn green terminology
  • Learn best practices, available tools, key concepts and approaches to incorporate green building practices on brownfield sites
  • Learn strategies to rebuild your cities today
  • Learn approaches to make cost benefit decisions and what green initiatives that give you the best return on your investment
  • Learn about available federal, state, and local incentives to finance urban redevelopment and sustainable initiatives
Cost: $195

This fee includes admission for the full day, course material, continental breakfast and lunch, and post-course access to the NBA web site with references and government funding sources.
