First NBA Maryland Chapter Meeting a Success!
NBA Maryland hosted its first chapter event Thursday November 29, 2007 in Baltimore at the Center for Marine Biotechnology on the inner harbor. The event focused on Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) in Maryland. Speakers from City of Baltimore and USEPA (Seema Iyer, PhD) and USEPA (Nancy Porter) offered their perspectives of how BRAC may impact Maryland communities and potentially influence revitalization through the responsible re-development of brownfields.

Background on BRAC in Maryland: The Department of Defense's 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) initiative at Fort Meade, National Naval Medical Center, Andrews Air Force Base, Fort Detrick, and Aberdeen Proving Ground, will result in the addition of approximately 60,000 jobs. This planned growth will require unprecedented improvement and development of infrastructure and housing in the jurisdictions affected by development, such as Baltimore County, Howard County, Fort , Anne Arundel County, City of Baltimore, and Harford County, just to name a few. This growth represents exciting sustainable development opportunities should they include the re-development of under-utilized and/or environmentally-impaired brownfields present in many of these jurisdictions.

The speakers’ PowerPoint presentations will be posted shortly.

Thank you to all that attended this great event!
